History of Uppaway Estates, Nevada

At the western base of Spooner Summit, just south of Historic Glenbrook there is a small lakeside community termed “Uppaway”. The property was the former estate of Major Max C. Fleischman and his wife Sarah. They purchased 44 acres of lakefront property from D.L. Bliss back in the 1930’s to build a summer residence. When deciding on the site for their new home, rather than build it lakeshore , Sarah Fleischman told her husband that she would rather have the home built “up a way” from the Lake, and hence the name Uppaway was born. The house they built in 1936 remains and has been painstakingly remodeled to reflect the original character and design.

Max Fleischman was the son of one of the founders of Fleischman’s yeast and was a major stockholder in General Foods. Max and Sarah were renowned philanthropists and resided in Nevada for several years and generously supported many local projects. Fleischman was an avid outdoorsman, yachtsman, aviator and parachutist. He served as Mayor of Santa Barbara, California and was a part owner of the Cincinnati Reds.
